Saukrates is an O.G. of Canadian hip hop. Long before Toronto was acknowledged as one of the new centers of the culture, the respected rapper/singer/producer of Guyanese descent was putting in work to put T-Dot on the map. He dropped his first mixtape in 1999 and has gone on to a distinguished career, collaborating with Redman and Method Man as well as Nelly Furtado.
Today MASS APPEAL proudly premieres “Fever,” a new single from Saukrates’ forthcoming Season Two album, the long-awaited follow up to 2012’s Season One.
“It’s an honor getting to work with a legend from your own city, but a privilege to make some good music at the same time,” says producer Memorecks, who made the beat for what would become “Fever.” “The unique arrangement of the song was a bit of a challenge, but pushed me into some cool territory sonically. Really proud of this one!”
Saukrates says that the track holds a special place in his heart, as it is dedicated to “my love, Alana.” Let him explain:
We went from love at first sight to hearts being broken, then onto her yearning for me, which I met with ignorance and neglect. I was too scared to open my soul again, proving to be an absolute idiot once I realized that I may lose the best woman that had ever crossed my path.
I guess if I don’t hear, I feel… is this the only way to learn?
Her words fell on my deaf ears and self-numbing mind until she felt that her passion had been misplaced. I almost lost her… It would prove to be a daunting task, a “K2 climb,” for me to to regain the love and trust of the woman of my dreams. So here came the “Fever”…
If you’ve ever been in love you’ve felt it. Tortured by her absence replaced by wonderful/missed memories and cold sweats, I decided to follow my heart for once and turn the tables.
Putting myself in her dainty little shoes was not only eye-opening but also life-changing in the effect that I COULD BE (or could BECOME) the man she always saw me as. Not so easy though, as she held me in the highest regard and as a “soul savior” of sorts. So I said to myself: “Amani, climb!”
Fast-forward to an inseparable love, a 17-year-old son headed for success, and a beautiful future ahead of us!!! “Fever” is but one brick in the foundation of what it takes to be a man in love with a brilliant woman.
With an intro like that, how could you not check the sounds below? Look out for Season Two, which is slated for a Dec. 1 release date.
